Making Money Writing For HorseNetwork.com

I will admit, I am not much of a ‘hands-on’ horse person—though I do love them. This actually makes me the right type of person for writing on this site. I have always believed horses to be among the most majestic and beautiful of animals.

In fact, I feel like most people would agree with me on that. I have never had the chance to have one of my own, but I love watching them, spending time around them, and appreciating them whenever I get the chance.

So naturally, this website really stood out to me.

Why Freelance Writing?

Before we specifically discuss this website, I would like to say a few words about freelance writing. There are a lot of misconceptions about this concept online, and mainstream media really romanticizes it. But here are a few facts that I think everyone should know about it.

  • Freelance writing is a lot of work
  • You spend far more time trying to find writing jobs than you do writing, especially in the beginning
  • You will face a lot of rejection, especially at first
  • There is a huge need for the work
  • The work actually pays pretty well if you find the right jobs
  • Did I mention that freelance writing is a lot of work?

Writing can make a pretty awesome side-hustle, which is why I am talking about it here. I have done quite a lot of freelance writing for extra money. In fact, over the course of several years, I was even doing it full-time. It is a lot of work, but it is also in high-demand—meaning that if you are willing to do a good job and put your best foot forward, you can usually find paying work.

But in order to find it, you need to be proactive and pitch. But how can you pitch if you don’t know who to pitch to?

This is a really good question, and forms the basis for why I am writing this review in the first place. As a writer who is constantly looking for sites to pitch to, I chose to take a closer look at HorseNetwork.com because they have a good reputation online.

But is it legitimate? How does HorseNetwork.com fit into our search for quality freelance writing gigs? And perhaps, most importantly, could this be a good site to write for?

Here is what I found out.

Taking A Closer Look At HorseNetwork.com

It is pretty obvious that HorseNetwork.com is all about horses. Menu tab options along their main menu tab include: Video, News, Sports, Horse Health, Lifestyle, Laugh, Learn, and Shop. They host blog posts, articles, videos, and more on their site—and from the looks of it, they are pretty successful. They even publish satire, which I was a fan of!

The design of the site is clean and professional. It looks good and seems well-formatted. I was also a pretty big fan of the design. It looks like a pretty standard blog-layout.

So far, so good!

But how good is the content that they publish? The quality was definitely my next concern, so that is what I decided to look at next.

I should probably mention that, as a freelance writer, it is really important to know what a site is looking for before you pitch to them. And often, the best way to figure this out is to spend some time reading what they have published in the past. So that’s what I wanted to do next on HorseNetwork.com.

How Good Is The Content On HorseNetwork.com?

I did some looking around and reading, and must say that I was impressed with the content. Some of it is more ‘factual’ than lifestyle-centered, but some of it was obviously written by people who have a lot of experience with horses. I am not really into horse racing or anything like that, but there was also quite a bit of content on the site about this.

As a general rule, I found that the articles I read on HorseNetwork.com were very well written. If you are a writer and have ideas about pitching to this site, be prepared to do your due diligence.

I would encourage you to read through their site and get a feel for the styles that they tend to publish as well. I would also encourage you to proof read and edit to the best of your ability, because this is not likely going to be a site that will pay for articles that have a lot of grammar or spelling mistakes!

Quality is always important if you are planning on making money as a freelance writer. So definitely remember to give your articles more than one proof-read-through, and remember to read it out loud at least once, as this can help to highlight problems that you might not otherwise notice!

Writing For HorseNetwork.com

The next thing that I wanted to check out was what it would actually take to pitch to HorseNetwork.com.

Here is what I found.

You can easily find the contributor page by scrolling down to the bottom of the landing page, where the footer is, and clicking the ‘Write For Us’ link. This will take you directly to the ‘contribute’ page, which looks like this.

Write For Horse Network

Scrolling down from this, the website says that their mission is to create ‘fresh, immersive articles on equestrian lifestyle and sport, current events, health and horsemanship.’ They also say that they are always looking for ‘smart, new ideas from horse-crazy folks like you.’

They also make a note of what types of articles they are currently prioritizing. For example, at the time that this was written, they were prioritizing submissions about horse health, interviews, profiles, and human interest stories.

They do a lot of talking about what they expect from their content, which is awesome. They also do some talking about what they are NOT looking for in their content, which is also awesome. They also tell you how to format your articles, which I really appreciated.

Thus-far, I was impressed at how detailed their submission guidelines were. I always like it when websites give you more information. It really helps to make the submission process a lot more user-friendly.

You need to submit your article using the submission button. They cannot accept articles submitted via email.

They generally pay about $50 or a little more for each post they get. But if the post is shared over 1,000 times on social media, they also pay out a $100 bonus, which is super-awesome!

So yeah. After reading through all of this, I definitely had a few thoughts about the site. Here is what I decided about it after looking into it.

My Personal Feelings About Writing For HorseNetwork.com

To be incredibly honest, this was one of the better sites that I have found for freelance writers. Granted, the niche is pretty specific—but if you are knowledgeable at all about horses, this could be the perfect site for you.

I could also see this site being perfect for someone who owns horses and/or works with them, but also loves to write.

With that being said, this is probably obviously not going to be a good site for you to pitch to if you are not interested in horses at all.

As far as payment is concerned, they pay out very decently. I can say from experience that it is hard to get 1,000 social media shares unless you are either incredibly well-known or have a massive social media following, but it is still a goal that is doable if you write something particularly good, interesting, or viral-worthy.

If you do plan to pitch an article to this site, remember to read the writing guidelines and to stick to them. Also remember to read and proof-read to make sure that you aren’t leaving any mistakes. On a site as popular as this one, mistakes could really hurt your chances of success.

At the end of the day, remember that there is no substitute for quality content. Informative, engaging, entertaining, and unique are all attributes that every successful freelance writer should become intimately acquainted with.

If you love horses and are into freelance writing as a side hustle, then I would encourage you to pitch to this site. It may not make you rich, but it is not a bad site to write for. You could certainly do much worse!
