Can You Really Make Money Writing For College Humor?

Make Money College Humor

This website is pretty well-known for publishing funny and interesting content. But can you really make money writing for College Humor?

Collegehumor.com is a site that most of us, at some point or another, have probably heard of. Even I have heard of them and visited their site before, and I kind of tend to live under a rock these days!

But I didn’t know that this site will pay you to write content for them, which is pretty awesome. Of course, there is a bit of a process involved in it, and you have to be good enough (and your piece good enough) to get accepted.

But from the sound of it, you can actually make pretty decent money writing for them.

So in this post, we are going to talk about writing for College Humor. What is it like? How difficult is it? And perhaps most importantly… how much do you get paid? Does the pay make the work to get published worthwhile?

These are all things that we wanted to discover, so I researched it… and here is what you need to know.

Making Money Writing For College Humor

So I think that the first thing to talk about, when looking at any opportunity like this, is to figure out what we are actually looking for. And for me, this is pretty easy.

I’m looking for side hustles. I want to find new and better ways to earn extra cash, and I want to be able to earn cash from them consistently, with flexibility, and in high-enough amounts that they truly make it worth my time.

Make no mistake. There are a lot of websites out there that will help you to make a few extra dollars here and there. But I am honestly not really interested in those.

I want to find websites that will pay me enough to make the opportunity truly worth the time… and this was my main question about writing for College Humor.

Do they pay enough to make it worth the time?

This is the main question that I sought to answer with my research, and we will get to it in just a moment.

My First Impression Of College Humor As A Website

So next, let’s talk about what my first impression of Collegehumor.com was like. Well, we all know that this is a pretty popular website, and if I am not mistaking, they also have a fairly prolific and popular YouTube channel.

Their website is set up pretty much like a blog. They publish articles in a number of different categories, including Comics, Love/Relationships, Movies/TV, Food, WTF, Life, Politics, etc.

In researching this site, I decided to read some of their content, just to refresh myself on the quality of their blogs and articles.

And in reviewing it, I was reminded that they actually publish a lot of comic-type content. In fact, the first several posts that I visited were more ‘comic-book-like’ than ‘blog-like.’

The truth is, however, that College Humor publishes a wide variety of different types of content. So before making the choice to try to submit anything to them, I would actually recommend, very strongly, that you take some time to read through their site to see what kind of content they usually publish.

A similar pattern is true for the site Cracked.com.

I will also, however, say this. You may be a bit more likely to get published here if you make comics, because from the look of it, they publish more comics than regular blog posts… and from how I understand it, it is actually a bit more challenging to make comics than blog posts for most people anyway.

So it would seem to make sense that you could probably find a place here, at least intermittently, if you were to produce quality comics that they could publish.

How Much Does College Humor Pay?

As far as I can tell, there is really only one section of the site that is dedicated to talking about submitting material, and it is in the FAQ section. Here is a screenshot of that part of the FAQ page.

College Humor FAQ

As you can see, there is not a ton of information here about submitting material. In fact, they pretty much just tell you to email the site.

So I did some looking around, and found some other sources that claimed to know what College Humor pays out for their content. Here are the rates that I got from these other online, third-party sources.

  • $35 for a single page of content
  • $50 for an article that spans multiple pages
  • As for picture galleries, they are said to pay $25 for 15 pictures, and $35 for 25 pictures

All in all, this doesn’t seem like too bad of a payout… though it also depends on how long it would take you to produce such content. I know first-hand that different people can do these things at different speeds.

I’ve known writers who can crank out two-page articles in twenty minutes, while I have also known writers who have a hard time writing the first draft of a single page in one day.

It is really all about your level of experience, your relevant skills, and how talented you are. It also, in the end, comes down to how hard you are willing to work for the payout.

About College Humor

CollegeHumor Media was founded back in 1999, and is headquartered in New York City. They are known for their funny and ‘offbeat’ web content, and in addition to the content on their website, they have also published three books.

The website itself has more than 15 million monthly users/visitors, and their site gets over 100 million page views every month.

They also have an email newsletter that goes out to 300,000 subscribers each week.

So yeah… say what you want about sites that pay freelancers to write content… but this site seems to be doing at least something right.

I am actually always pretty happy to learn about new sites that accept submissions like this… and must admit that I was surprised to learn that College Humor accepts any kind of outside submissions at all.

Their content is pretty professional, and their site is so… (I think I would define it as)interestingly focused on sticking to their own unique brand of offbeat and humorous entertainment, that it would almost seem to me like they would keep most of their writing in-house.

They probably do still keep most of it in house, but I will just say that I am pleasantly surprised that they also offer opportunities to other writers to submit material as well.

My Personal Feelings About Submitting Content To College Humor

Personally, I love College Humor. I mean, who doesn’t love this site? Quite personally, I think that the idea of writing a piece and submitting it to them sounds super fun.

But then again, I’m not necessarily here to just ‘have fun.’ I need to think of this in terms of it being a side hustle.

So with that being said, here is what I am thinking about this opportunity after taking a look at it.

I feel like this could absolutely be a good use of your time if you are into this kind of thing… and by ‘this kind of thing,’ I mean the idea of pitching submissions to websites that pay for them upon acceptance in hopes that you will get something accepted. And then, in turn, get paid for it.

I feel like College Humor pays well enough to make writing for them worth the time, though you do have to factor in some failures.

The real ‘crunch’ with this one comes from the sheer unlikelihood that you would ever get anything past the editors. This is a very, very popular site… so obviously, they are going to want content that they really believe will appeal to their reader base.

This means that, in order to sell to them, you have to not only be ‘good’ at what you do, but also have the right kind of style and taste that they are looking for.

You also need to be funny and entertaining at the same time.

So if you are interested in pitching to them and making some extra money doing it, go for it. But don’t get upset if it takes a few tries to get something accepted, or if it takes a long time to hear any kind of response.

And don’t think that this side gig is going to make you rich, either. To be honest, College Humor doesn’t seem to pay out as much as some of the sites that I’ve look at.

But they are also a lot bigger and more successful, so they probably have all kinds of people submitting content every day.

In the end, whether or not you can succeed at making extra money this way will depend mostly on you. How hard are you willing to try?

How far are you willing to go? How many times are you willing to get something rejected before you come up with a winner?

If you think you’re up to the challenge, then I would encourage you to give it a whirl… just don’t expect to become a best-seller from it or to earn a fortune doing it.
