Can You Really Make Money Writing Comments Online?

is wealthy affiliate a scam or can i actually make a six figure income online as an affiliate marketer

Not too long ago, I became aware of the fact that ‘making money writing comments’ was a popular search online. So I decided to look into it.

I was hoping to discover a secret side-hustle where you could earn some awesome money commenting on blogs, videos, or products… but as it turns out, it may not be as promising an opportunity as I had hoped. Can you really make money writing comments online?

Making Money Writing Comments Online

To dig into this, we need to consider what comment services people are looking for and the associated potential for income. Here’s what you need to know.

The Basics

This idea has obviously been around for a long time. On many freelancing sites, you can actually make money by accepting ‘commenting’ jobs. I once talked to a freelancer who was hired by a web developer to grow a music niche forum website.

The freelancer’s job? To leave 5 comments every day in various different threads on the website, 5 days a week. As compensation… he was paid $5 a week, with the promise that if he kept it up for a month, the payment would increase to $10 per week.

It may not sound like much… and it isn’t.

But when you get right down to it… how much is it actually worth? At what point is it worth more for the web developer to just leave those comments themselves?

This is kind of the problem with the idea of getting paid to write comments… but we will talk more about this idea in a moment.

As it turned out, the web developer wanted the comments to be pretty in-depth… and the writer realized that he was only going to be making about $1-$2 an hour on the job.

But what surprised me the most was that this actually set a pretty standard tone for ‘pricing.’ At least, that is what I discovered as I continued my research. In the old days, you used to be able to write reviews on Amazon in exchange for free products. But nowadays, even that is considered ‘black hat.’

There are still different websites that claim to pay you for commenting. Kingged.com is one such site. But when I looked over it, I was not impressed… and felt very much like I was looking at an affiliate-slash-pyramid scheme.

You can look into freelance websites like Upwork.com and Freelancer.com to find commenting jobs. But if your search reveals anything close to what mine unveiled, you will find that these types of jobs tend not to pay very much.

I also found a pretty sketchy plan for making money on YouTube comments that was obviously a bit ‘black hat,’ at least in design.

The idea was to create about 15 different YouTube accounts, get an account with a CPD affiliate network, and select a popular video on YouTube to comment on.

Then, you upload some files to your CPD network, comment on a popular video mentioning the download link of your files, and log in with all of your other accounts. Then, one by one, you find your comment, and leave ‘thumbs up’ reactions from all of these accounts so that your comment will make it to the top of the comment section.

As you can obviously see, this is the exact type of thing that makes other people frustrated on sites like YouTube. We see these types of comments all the time… and while they may get a few clicks, there is rarely any value to be found here.

So this begs the question… is attempting to write comments for cash really worth the money, or are you going to end up finding this to be more or less a waste of your time?

These are all very good questions. And in this article, I am going to try to give my two-cents on some of them.

Why Would Someone Pay For Comments?

Comments can drive traffic to a website. They can also help to build a buzz, and well-written comments can help to provide additional value to readers. There are people out there who pay for comments. But admittedly, the jobs are difficult to find and they usually do not end up paying out extremely well.

Is There Any Good Way To Make Money Commenting?

Nowadays, the short answer is no. There may be ways to make a little bit of money like this. And yes, there are possible scenarios where commenting on videos, blogs, or products may create enough value to warrant hiring a freelancer to do it.

But aside from very select and out-of-the-ordinary occurrences, there seem to be very few opportunities to earn any real, meaningful money commenting on videos, blogs, or products.

This kind of reminds me of surveys on apps (like Smart Panel Survey App). You can absolutely make a bit of money filling out surveys on apps… but the amount of money is going to be negligible. We are talking about a lot less than $1 or $2 an hour in most cases.

What Is Better Than Commenting?

If you want to earn money online, you are much more likely to make your time count for something by writing or creating actual valuable content online… and either selling your own products, or finding a way to make affiliate marketing work for you on a legitimate level.

The honest truth is that a lot of people want to earn an income online. But most people do not want to put in the time and effort it takes to create something meaningful.

They want to earn a fast dollar quickly… and while this is possible, you also have to ask yourself how much your time is worth. Affiliate marketing can be an awesome way to earn some cash… but it is absolutely in your best interest to go about it in such a way as to create real value for people at the same time.

Of course, the main problem with affiliate marketing is that it takes time to build up. So, if you are needing a lot of money really fast, this may not be the best-sounding option. If that is the case, then you may want to consider some other type of side-hustle… like donating plasma, delivering pizzas, or trying your hand at freelancing.

The Truth About Earning Money Online

The simple truth of the matter is that most people want to earn money quickly, easily, and without being required to put in a bunch of work or invest a lot of cash in the process. We see advertisements where ‘gurus’ have made millions of dollars online, and many people want to replicate this idea in their own life.

The only problem is that many of these claims are false. The only people who make real, legitimate, long-term income online are people who provide some kind of value to consumers, readers, and web visitors.

That is why affiliate marketing can actually work. But unfortunately, we are getting to a point with online content nowadays where you cannot really do enough with a comment to make serious cash with it.

Plus, people are getting smarter about the internet as well. They are starting to realize when comments are fake, and are getting much better at spotting the real ones.

In all honesty, what we are seeing these days is a return to the ‘real’ idea of value on the internet. People don’t want to get spammed. They don’t want to waste their time on fake media. They want to find what they are looking for, fix their problems, make their lives better, and earn some sweet extra cash at the same time (if possible).

So Where Does That Leave Us On Commenting To Make Extra Money?

If you are hoping to make some extra money, there are a LOT of ways to do it. But as far as we can tell, the amounts of money that you would make taking even some of the best commenting jobs are pretty trivial.

You may be able to earn a few dollars here and there. But in the long run, there are far better things to do in your extra time for extra money.

If you have some talent for writing, some obvious first-idea ways to earn a bit of extra cash could be to…

  • Write articles for Medium.com
  • Write articles for websites like Listverse.com
  • Create your own blog and start affiliate marketing
  • Create your own classes or products and sell them online
  • Try to hire out as a freelancer and make some extra cash providing value to your clients
  • Take on a side job in your local community

As you can see, there is no shortage of opportunities.

Not too long ago, I talked to another freelancer who was writing Instagram posts for a digital marketing company for $25 per 10 posts. This only took him like an hour, and he made $25 an hour doing it!

Social media may offer much better alternatives if you want to make more money writing short blurbs or comment-style copy.

There is also something to be said for creating value in your side hustle. We’ve mentioned this, but it bears a bit of specific discussion as well. Yes, there are hustles that fall under the realm of the ‘mundane.’ But when you look really closely, you will usually see that the people who earn the most with their side hustles are the people who do something creative and take pride in it.

In other words, your side-hustle should mirror your passion. You may have to practice a bit to get better at it, but you will notice a lot of progress if you can channel your passion and do something you care about.
